Teaching Children to Create Their Own Value:
A Lesson Beyond Painting

Last spring, I encouraged my nine-year-old granddaughter and five-year-old grandson to make small, handmade paintings as a creative project. I suggested that we save their work and sell it at a craft show in the fall.

When October came, both children joined me at the show. They proudly displayed and sold their own creations. A few customers, touched by their story, purchased their little paintings to encourage them. I gave the earnings to the children and suggested that their mother help them open savings accounts.

The money was small, but the lesson was much bigger.

They experienced an entire process: setting a goal, planning ahead, creating something with their own hands, preparing for an exhibition, meeting customers, and finally earning income through their own efforts. They began to understand that rewards come not simply from receiving money from others, but from creating value through creativity, labor, and service.

Most importantly, they learned that customers are not merely people who provide money. They are people we should respect, communicate with, and serve sincerely. Earning money is not just about selling something; it is about offering something meaningful to others.

In today’s AI-driven world, where machines can produce images and objects so easily, I believe teaching children to create something with their own hands is especially important. Handmade art develops patience, imagination, concentration, confidence, and a sense of personal accomplishment. It teaches children that the process of making is as valuable as the final product.

This was only a small family project, but it offered a meaningful early lesson in long-term planning, step-by-step execution, creativity, entrepreneurship, and human relationships. I hope to continue this tradition next year.

Perhaps one of the greatest gifts grandparents can give children is not money itself, but the experience and confidence to learn how to create their own value.
